Chikungunya

Chikungunya is an infection spread by the Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes mainly bite during daytime.

Most people have no symptoms. However, some develop symptoms after a few days to a maximum of two weeks, such as:

  • fever
  • nausea
  • headache
  • joint and muscle pain
  • red blotchy rash

There is no specific treatment for this disease.

Risk areas

The disease occurs in (sub-)tropical regions. There is usually no risk above an altitude of 2000 metres.

Be thorough in the use of mosquito-repellent measures, from sunrise to sunset.

Vaccination

There is no suitable vaccine for travellers.
