      Japanese encephalitis vaccination

      The vaccine Ixiaro® protects against Japanese encephalitis. Children between 2 months and 3 years old may receive half a dose.

      When is vaccination recommended?

      • If you often stay in a high-risk area e.g. more than a month, or for a longer period of time. 

      • If in a risk area you often stay outdoors in the countryside in the evening.

      Vaccination schedule

      • 2 doses with a 4-week interval.

      • Rapid schedule: If there is not enough time, the interval can be shortened to 1 week for adults between 18 and 65 years old.

      • Boosters:

        • Revaccination takes place after 12 to 24 months, or after 12 months in 65+

        • In case of ongoing exposure, a  second booster can be offered 10 years after the last dose
      • Children from 2 months to 3 years old receive half a dose.

      Duration of protection

      The duration of protection after the third dose is at least 10 years.
