      Chikungunya

      Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes mainly bite during daytime.

      The disease can be asymptomatic, or it may cause the following symptoms a few days to two weeks after infection:

      • fever
      • nausea
      • headache
      • severe joint pain and swelling
      • muscle pain
      • red blotchy rash

      Joint pain can sometimes last for weeks to months.

      There is no specific treatment for this disease. 

      Risk areas

      The disease occurs in (sub-)tropical regions. There is usually no risk above an altitude of 2000 metres.

      Mosquito-repellent measures

      Be thorough in the use of mosquito-repellent measures, from sunrise to sunset.

      Vaccination

      A vaccine is available.
