      Outbreaks

      • There is an outbreak of the chikungunya virus in the departments of Santa Cruz and Cochabamba. Mosquito prevention is recommended for everyone, vaccination is recommended for some travellers.

      This page contains the main health risks for travellers and general recommendations. Travel conditions are different for everyone and each patient's health condition varies.       Important health risks

      Malaria risk areas

      • Moderate in the regions below 2500 m west and south of the departments of Pando and Beni, in the north of La Paz Department and regions bordering Brazil. 

      • Low in the regions below 2500 m in the southern part of Beni Department and in parts of the departments of Santa Cruz, La Paz, and Tarija.

      • None in areas above 2500 m including La Paz, Sucre, Oruro, Lake Titiaca and most of the central and southern part of the country. 

      In case of fever during or after your journey, get tested for malaria as soon as possible.

      Yellow fever

      There is a risk of yellow fever east of the Andes; the entire departments of Beni, Pando, Santa Cruz and the coloured regions of Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, La Paz and Tarija.

      The risk of yellow fever is very low or absent in the areas above 2300m and the areas that are not mentioned in the list above, the cities of La Paz, Sucre and Cochabamba included.

      Chikungunya 

      There is an outbreak of chikungunya. Protect yourself against mosquitoes; vaccination is recommended.

      Other insect-borne diseases

      Insects can transmit diseases such as dengue,  zika, leishmaniasis, oropouche and Chagas disease.

      Dogs and other mammals can be infected with rabies.

      Altitude sickness

      You may experience altitude sickness in areas above 2500 metres.

      Vaccinations

      Yellow fever

      Recommended

      Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for all travellers to a region at risk of yellow fever. In addition, vaccination is compulsory if you have recently been visited certain countries.

      This vaccination must be administered at least ten days prior to arrival by an official yellow fever vaccination centre.

      Hepatitis A

      Recommended

      Hepatitis A vaccination is recommended for all travellers.

      Chikungunya

      Recommended

      The Chikungunya vaccine is recommended.
